Galleri Urbane is pleased to announce ‘Unplotted Waters’, new work by Dallas based artist Juan Alberto Negroni on view in the ‘Corridor’. Meet the artist on January 10th from 5:00 - 7:00pm.

The new series of water colors in ‘Unplotted Waters’ records the impression of presence – seascapes of tumultuous waves and sky. Layers accumulate and erode, tones shift almost imperceptibly, and surfaces appear worked, rubbed, and weathered. Negroni, pondering the printmaking process, created these seascapes as a way to accentuate those features of layering, repetition, and saturation. Just as the sea saturates itself and the surrounding shore, Negroni’s ink emphasizes the undulating surface of the water. Rather than placing significance in place, the emotive qualities are at forefront – “I was thinking about isolation, solitude, and calm, but also about ambiguity and duration. The horizons are unstable, the spaces deliberately undefined. These works resist geography,” says Negroni.

The temporal seems caught between a state of permanence and change, water always moving yet the sea is always there. The sea you perceive is never the same water. Negroni thinks of this impermanence as, “somewhere between an ancestral past and an unknown future.” We can wade within this balance, feeling the weight of both histories. “Days spent looking at the sea are not the same as days spent inside it,” says Negroni. Within these seascapes of Unplotted Waters, the watercolors occupy threshold; places of solitude and places for solitude.
