HISTORY
Since 2000, Galleri Urbane is committed to the practices of emerging and mid-career artists, both national and international. This is achieved through innovative curation, expansion of private and public collectors, and exposure through art fairs to collectors and curators. The artists that Urbane exhibits share the gallery's mission to innovate upon, and beyond, existing applications and conventions. These artists are from a variety of backgrounds, with exhibitions that highlight their unique voices, invite cross-cultural conversations, and give space to those that have been underrepresented in the art historical canon. Urbane focuses on furthering the long-term advancement of artists' careers through collaborative solo and group exhibitions with prominent contemporary galleries, art fairs, and outside (or non-profit) institutions.
The Gallery was first founded in 2000 in Silver City, New Mexico, where exhibitions were held in the front rooms of the owners' Victorian home. After two pop up exhibitions (2001 - 2002) in empty storefronts in Marfa, Tx, owners Ree and Jason Willaford then established Galleri Urbane in a 100-year-old adobe building in the Central Marfa Historic District (Texas) in 2003. In 2009, the Dallas location opened in the Design District, where the gallery continues to prosper. After exhibiting in Marfa for 16 years, the Willafords closed that chapter in 2019 to focus on Dallas collectors and art fairs within the US and abroad. With a roster that now includes over 20 emerging and mid-career artists, these painters, photographers, sculptures, mixed-media, and conceptual artists unveil solo and group exhibitions every seven weeks, with extended dates for special exhibitions, fueled by innovative works created by both gallery-represented and visiting artists.
Galleri Urbane is pleased to offer appointments in English and Spanish for consultations, tours, and viewings.
