Galleri Urbane is pleased to present RIPE, an exhibition featuring the work of numerous artists from its roster. The group exhibition features recently created works to offer the latest updates from these artists’ studios located around the country and abroad. Also included are works from artists invited to exhibit with the gallery for the first time, a reflection of the gallery’s ever-evolving vision and pursuit of new perspectives.

Highlights from the exhibition include a series of embroidered works by Peter Frederiksen, whose first solo show with the gallery at the end of 2020 was a sold-out success. In Giving Up (2021), ten individual canvases each serve as a single frame for an animated image of a waving white flag. The piece perfectly illustrates the influence of classic animation on Peter’s sought-after embroidered works. In her contribution, Rachel Hellmann departs from the works on paper and shaped-wood paintings the Terre Haute artist has become known for. In Slide By (2020), Hellmann’s origami-inspired geometric abstractions are produced on a ground of cut aluminum that appears to float from the wall. The work’s vibrant colors coupled with its irregular edges create playful illusions of depth, complimented by a subtle glow of green emanating from behind. After her inaugural solo exhibition with the gallery was cut short in March of 2020, Rachel Grobstein returns with her impressive miniature sculptures and paintings. Finch (2021) and Sparrow (2021) depict scaled-down scenes of birds feasting on discarded snacks including a half-eaten hot dog and a bag of Cheetos. Entirely constructed and painted by hand, the immaculately detailed sculptures are inspired by Grobstein’s time spent outdoors eating and observing her urban surroundings over the last few months.

In addition to these works and many more by gallery artists, RIPE is fortunate to introduce our audience to works by a number of artists exhibiting with us for the first time. Manchester-based Ekun Richard presents elegant oil paintings on paper. Through simplified forms and a rich, neutral color palette, the emerging artist’s work pay homage to the natural world. Another international addition is found in paintings by Aron Barath, a contemporary of gallery artist József Csató in Budapest. His canvases, though intimate in scale, are packed with a vibrant fusion of gesture, color and light. Joining the gallery from Chicago is Michelle Wasson, whose works offer a sensual refuge from reality. In her canvases, richly layered colors build up to portray surreal scenes reminiscent of supernatural spaces or flashes from art history. Self-taught artist Jonathan Paul Jackson (Houston) contributes mixed media works on hand pressed paper, highlight his affinity for collage and Neo-expressionist approach.
RIPE offers the gallery a rare chance to exhibit such a broad selection of artists. While the works on view vary widely in technique and conceptual basis, together they present a snapshot of Galleri Urbane’s artistic ethos.
