JUAN ALBERTO NEGRONI
Galleri Urbane is pleased to present ‘SHOW TITLE,’ for the first exhibition of The Room. In this series, monolithic forms function simultaneously as bodies, stones, islands, and peninsulas, ambiguous entities that oscillate between the geological and the human. The frontal quality of many of the compositions engages with the tradition of portraiture and with representational strategies associated with monuments, while other images suggest aerial or cartographic views of fragmented landmasses. (This statement refers only to the new work, however I’ll ask for more specific information as we get closer).

These scenes suggest remnants of an uncertain civilization: fragments of memory whose interpretation depends as much on the observer as on the one who records history. As in Revaluation of Origin, the works emerge from a concern with the processes of colonization, displacement, and cultural construction in the Caribbean. Here, however, the focus also shifts toward the fragility of inherited information and what future generations may understand or misunderstand about our present.
