ABOUT

Colby Currie’s paintings come about through iterations of process and material. These iterations as seen through mereological thinking and self-rules create series of paintings that can be seen as individuals and groups of a whole. Each painting is a study of its individuality and its relationship to the whole. Using common and traditional materials being oil paint, spray paint, acrylic, rabbit skin glue, linen, canvas, and stretchers paired with non-traditional processes - these components are the materials and the process combined as a sort of versioning of painting itself. Marks are made in reaction to the ever-changing natural and urban landscape he inhabits through combinations of stains, transfers, smears, and inversions of the canvas. These explorations in paint and material move my painting practice toward series of distinct material abstractions that provoke the balance between inquiry and conclusiveness.

Colby Currie (b.1982) earned his MFA in Painting and Drawing from the University of North Texas. Colby has developed an aesthetic that embodies discussions on natural and urban vestiges combined with a deconstructed approach to painting. Currie lives and works in Amarillo, TX where he is the Curator of Education at the Amarillo Museum of Art.
