In
each drawing a small, photographic fragment is the focal point.
Yet... the image is somehow abstracted, partially torn away or
covered over by paint and drawing marks.... Berman's drawings
seem both to treasure and obliterate the photographic image-fragment,
imparting to it the quality of a relic or a ruin at once decayed
and enhanced by processes of composition and decomposition. This
dual sense of preciousness and loss may also apply to some of
the subjects of the photographs as well, indicating ambivalence
about their status as icons of the American west....
